Chapter 13: The Locker

Her heels faded down the aisle, and I stood there with the candles ticking behind me.

Camille wanted me to run to Nash.

She had planned for it.

So I did the opposite, and I sat down in the front pew and made myself breathe for one full minute.

Then I texted Nash.

Stay in the common room until midnight. Be loud. Be seen by everyone.

He answered right away.

Why? Where are you?

Trust me for one night, I wrote.

There was a long gap, and then his reply:

Always. Be careful.

I looked at the last one for longer than I should have.

Hattie was waiting by the side door of the chapel with a flashlight and the duck keyring.

"Tell me it's a bad idea," she said.

"It's a bad idea."

"Good. I wanted to hear it said." She jingled the keys.

She added, "The senior hall camera has been broken since August."

"Convenient for somebody."

"For us, tonight."

We walked across the dark quad.

Founders Hall was empty on Sunday nights, and the senior lockers stood in a long green row under one buzzing light.

Hattie found number 114 by the brass plate.

Reuter, N.

I pulled on the wool gloves from my coat pocket.

"You think the key is really in there?" Hattie whispered.

"Camille told me it was."

"Camille lies."

"Not when the truth hurts more."

The master key turned with a click that sounded in that hall.
