Chapter 15: Teddy

Teddy Prescott spent the rest of Monday not being seen.

He skipped lunch and he skipped practice.

Hattie's father raked the paths and noticed everything.

He had told her the lacrosse captain was sitting on the empty bleachers since four.

"Alone," Hattie reported. "No phone. Just sitting. My dad said it was like watching a dog wait for a car that isn't coming back."

"Does Camille know?"

"Camille hasn't spoken to him since homeroom. Her friends are saying he took the envelope on his own to impress her."

"She's writing it already."

"She wrote it in homeroom."

I put on my coat.

Nash caught my sleeve at the door of the dorm.

"Not alone," he said.

"He won't talk with you there. You're the one he helped her frame."

His jaw moved.

"Then I'll wait at the bottom of the hill, where I can see you."

"Fine."

"If he touches you, I'll break his hand."

"If he touches me, I'll do it first," I said. "Stay where you can see me."

The bleachers stood on the far side of the field, gray aluminum in the dusk.

Teddy sat on the top bench with his forearms on his knees and his lacrosse jacket zipped to the chin.

He heard my boots on the steps and did not turn.

"Go away," he said. "Please."

I sat down two benches below him, which was far enough to feel safe and near enough to talk.
