Chapter 17: Dennis the Cat
At five on Monday morning, two state inspectors stood at the dock door holding a clipboard and a complaint.
It was twelve degrees, and the loading bay lights made everyone's breath glow.
I had come in my work coat, with my coffee, because I'd slept three hours and wanted to see.
Pete read the complaint under the light.
"Unsafe racking," he said. "Unpaid overtime. And unauthorized persons living on the premises."
"That's our cot," said Killian.
He stood next to the old driver with his pallet jack, in a jacket that finally had no tags.
"Is it?" said the younger inspector, a woman with a tired, fair face.
"Pete let me sleep in the office the last two weeks. I had no place to go."
"I can't legally let you do that, sir."
"I know. It's why I'm moving out tonight."
The younger inspector wrote that down.
The older one, a man with a cough, waved at the forty workers drifting in through the cold.
"We'll need to talk to staff," he said. "Privately, one at a time."
