Chapter 22: What She Asks For

On Sunday at six, Killian climbed the stairs to my apartment with a clean shirt and a ballpoint pen.

I had made tea, and I had put two chairs at the small table by the window.

I had not made eggs.

He sat down and put the pen square in front of him.

I took a yellow legal pad out of my bag.

It already had writing on it, in my small block capitals, with a line drawn under each.

"I'll read them out," I said. "You can say yes or no. Anything else, you wait until I'm finished."

"Understood."

"Number one."

I looked at the pad, though I knew it by heart.

"You see a therapist, every week, for as long as it takes, and I don't ask what's said."

"I started Tuesday."

I blinked.

"Her name's on my phone if you want it. She told me this is not about you." His mouth lifted. "I said I'd tell you anyway."

"Fine. Yes?"

"Yes."

I made a tick.

"Number two. You don't pay for anything of mine. No rent, no bills, no gifts, no rescue. If my warehouse burns down, we put it out together, and we pay for it together."
