Chapter 13: Hester's Table
"Get Hester," I said.
Torin woke when I said it, and saw my face, and didn't ask why.
Hester was standing in the doorway in her nightgown before I finished the sentence.
She put her palm on his chest.
She closed her eyes.
Then she opened them and looked at me, and I knew.
"How long?" Torin asked.
"The wasting has been fed for two years," Hester said. "It's been starved for two days. It's making up the difference."
"How long, Hester?"
"Weeks. If I keep the fever down and he lies still." She folded her arms. "Eight weeks, if you're stubborn. Ten, if you're lucky."
"The Solstice is ten weeks off."
"I know."
Nobody said anything.
Dunne's truck came up the logging road at sunrise, and he stood in the kitchen with his hat in his hands and listened to it.
"I'm staying," he said, when she'd finished. "I'll take the porch."
"We have a spare room," Hester said dryly.
"I'll take the porch."
For the first seven weeks, Torin lay in the back room, and I sat with him every evening.
