Chapter 17: The Solstice Stone

I walked up the trail to the Moon Stone at a quarter to midnight with my father's staff in my hand.

I did not go alone.

Dunne carried Torin on his back.

Torin had refused to be left behind, and he had lost the argument about walking.

Hester came behind with her bag.

And behind her came the Creek, sixty wolves in silence, with their hands empty and their heads up.

The note had said no army.

I figured sixty was a family.

The pines opened onto the ring, and my stomach turned over.

The stone was lit with a hundred candles.

White tapers stood around its edge in a circle, burning steady in the freezing air.

In the center of the flat grey slab stood a small figure in a white dress.

Around the ring, as thick as trees, stood the Hollow.

I counted until I stopped counting.

Three hundred wolves.

Maybe more.

They stood shoulder to shoulder in oiled coats, quiet, with their arms folded and their eyes on me.

It was the whole west side of the valley.

"Linnea!" Saskia called, warm as honey. "You came."
