Chapter 19: The Black Saddle
I didn't think.
My wolf came up through the middle of me.
The shift took less than a heartbeat.
My clothes burst off and my bones threw themselves open.
Then I was a wolf the size of a pony, standing over Torin with my teeth bared.
The knife came down.
I took it on my shoulder.
It bit in, silver and cold, and I felt it grate on bone.
I didn't care.
I swung my head round and closed my jaws on Saskia's wrist.
She shrieked.
The blade dropped out of her hand and rang on the stone.
I held on.
I felt the delicate bones in her forearm shift under my teeth and the bracelet's silver thread cut into my gums.
She looked up at me with her pretty face gone white and wet and twisted.
For the first time in two years she looked like exactly what she was.
I threw her.
She hit the slab on her back and skidded to the candles and knocked half of them over.
The flames guttered and caught her white dress.
She screamed and rolled, beating at the hem, and the ring of Hollow wolves watched her with blank, glassy eyes.
