Chapter 14: The Photo

By morning the photo had its own name.

At six a.m. Dex posted a black square with white words on it.

"I'm asking for privacy while I process this betrayal. Please be kind to everyone involved."

It had a million likes by the time we landed in Denver.

Under mine, people were something else.

They called me a cheater and a gold digger in the same sentence.

They found Cody's school and left one-star reviews for a high school.

"They gave the chemistry department one star," Robin said, scrolling in the airport. "The chemistry department. What did the periodic table ever do to them?"

Cody didn't laugh.

His ex-wife had texted him, and he showed me.

"Is Junie going to see this at school?"

He didn't answer it for an hour.

On Monday the chief called us both in.

In his office, with the blinds down.

He had the photo on his monitor.

He'd turned the monitor so it faced the wall.

"Sit," he said.

We sat.

"I'm going to ask once," he said. "Are you two in a relationship?"

Cody opened his mouth.

I got there first.

"Not yet," I said. "Ask me again in August."

"You stopped it."

"Yes."

The chief looked at Cody.

"She stopped it," Cody said. "I agreed with her. I'd still agree with her."

"And after August thirteenth?"

Neither of us said anything.

The chief rubbed his eyes.

"Raynor, you're new on the panel. You're on probation and everybody in this building knows it. Duffield, you're the best assistant I have and you've got a playoff line coming in the fall."

He put both hands flat on the desk.

"Two people in a romantic relationship don't work the same crew. That's the rule. Somebody comes off."

"Me," Cody said.
