Chapter 26: The Mixed Zone

The press area was a strip of carpet behind a rope, with a backdrop of sponsor logos and a table of microphones.

Courtney was one of them.

She was at the end, in her camel coat, with her network microphone held down at her side.

Dex didn't see her yet.

He was still in his kit, mud to the knees, the captain's armband on his sleeve.

He took it off.

He put it on the table next to the microphones.

"Five years ago I married Meg Raynor," he said. "At the courthouse downtown. April tenth."

Nobody asked a question.

Nobody moved.

"Two years ago a photographer caught her coming out of our building with groceries. I told him she was my housekeeper." He looked at the table. "She was my wife. I said it to the newspapers. I let it stand."

I was at the mouth of the tunnel, twenty feet away, still in my black jersey.

Robin stood next to me, holding my hand.

"Back then Meg was the best young referee in the second division," Dex said. "I took her career, and she kept it quiet for five years. I'm done letting her carry that for me."
