Chapter 11: Folly Road

For the first few seconds, nobody understood.

People smiled at the screen, waiting for baby pictures.

Somebody said, "Is this a commercial?"

Then the pale dress came walking along the shoulder of the road, and the headlights came up behind it.

The sound the room made was not a scream.

It was three hundred people breathing in at once.

On stage, Annie's hand slipped out of Bryce's.

She didn't look at him.

She was looking up at the screen, at a girl holding her shoes in the rain.

The car door opened.

The man under the station lights turned his face toward the camera, and the face was taller than a house.

Somebody at the front table said, "Is that Bryce?"

Then everyone was saying it.

Bryce's name went through the room.

Nobody in the room looked away.

At the board table, a woman put her hand over her mouth.

The pastor stood up, then didn't know what to do and sat back down.

My mother came off the stage steps fast, faster than I'd ever seen her move in heels.

She went for the cart at the side of the stage where the cables ran to the projector.

Gran got there first.

I don't know how. She was seventy-nine and she was at our table one second and in front of that cart the next, in black silk, with both hands on the cord.

"Mama, move."

"Make me, Joelle."

They stood a foot apart in front of everyone, mother and daughter, with my mother's hand out and Gran not moving an inch.
