Chapter 19: The Board
I didn't open the screen door.
My father stood on the other side of it with his hat in his hand.
"Did you hear me?" he said. "CEO. The board wants a Keene they can put in front of the bank. A clean one. The only clean one I've got left is you."
"I'm the felon, Dad. You told your lobby."
"That'll be fixed. The lawyers are already filing." He opened the checkbook against the door frame and wrote something and tore it out. "And this is for the five years."
He held it up to the screen.
It was signed. The amount line was blank.
Behind me, Gran set her coffee cup down very hard.
Annie didn't say anything. She was watching my face.
"You're not going to tear it up?" my father said.
"No."
He looked relieved for half a second.
I opened the screen door, took the check out of his hand, and put it under Gran's brick.
"It holds the door," I said. "When's the meeting?"
"Ten. Tenth floor." He put his hat on. "Wear a tie."
"I don't own one."
He took off his bow tie and held it out.
I didn't take it.
He put it back in his pocket and went down the steps.
At ten o'clock I walked into the lobby on East Bay in my one shirt with a collar.
