Chapter 6: Ten Minutes

She sat down on the porch swing and hooked the cane over the arm.

I sat on the railing across from her.

Far enough.

She set her phone face up on her knee and started a timer.

10:00.

9:59.

"Bryce thinks I'm at my mother's," she said. "Go."

"Where do you want me to start?"

"Where you say you were."

"On the dock. The end of it. Past the boathouse."

"Why?"

"Because Bryce's friends were doing a toast to Bryce, and then another toast to Bryce, and I'd heard enough toasts to Bryce. I took a beer down there and lay on the boards. I had one before that. Two."

"And you fell asleep."

"I'd worked a sixty-hour week. I fell asleep."

"And your keys?"

"In my jacket. On a chair in the kitchen. I took it off because it was hot."

She was watching my face the whole time. Dancers watch people. They spend their lives in mirrors.

"What's the last thing you remember?" I asked.

"No. I'm asking."

"Fair."

8:12.

"I woke up because somebody was yelling for Bryce down at the house," I said. "It was after one. There were blue lights on Folly Road. I walked up and my mother met me on the lawn and told me to go to bed. She said there'd been an accident on the road and the police were handling it. She didn't say it was you."
