Chapter 29: The Diner
I read it sitting on the floor of the empty bedroom, wrapped in the quilt, with Conor asleep beside me.
Verity's handwriting was round and careful, the way it had been on birthday cards when we were kids.
She'd numbered the paragraphs.
"One. I pleaded guilty on February twelfth, to identity fraud. A year of probation and two hundred hours of community service. I'm doing them at a food pantry in Dorchester. I'm bad at stacking cans."
"Two. I sold my car and my jewelry and sent the first forty thousand dollars back to the families. I have a lawyer helping me find every name. It'll take me years to pay the rest. I'm going to do it anyway."
"Three. My new kidney works. My creatinine is one point one. The teacher's husband came to see me in the hospital. He brought me a spelling test his wife's class did about kidneys. Somebody spelled it with a C."
"Four. Mom calls me every day. I don't pick up. I listen to the first few words of every voicemail and then I delete it. I don't know if that makes me a good person or a bad one."
"Five. I didn't have a five last time. I'd like to buy you breakfast. You don't have to come. If you don't, I'll understand, and I'll stop writing."
