Chapter 32: The 4:40
The text came at 4:11, on the twenty-fourth of September.
I was in Room 312, putting the lid back on a tin of shortbread.
I'd been Harbor's assistant donor advocate since June.
The cardigan with the hole in the elbow was still in the chair across from mine, two days a week, until the end of the year.
The rest of the week, the chair was mine.
I'd just finished with a nineteen-year-old who wanted to give a kidney to her stepfather.
I'd asked her what she had for breakfast in 2009.
She'd laughed and said she was two.
Then I'd asked her who in her family was most afraid she'd say no, and she'd stopped laughing and told me the truth.
I gave her thirty days.
My phone buzzed on the desk.
The number wasn't saved.
I knew it anyway.
"Dinner tonight? 7. Anywhere you like. I'll pay. I know I'm not supposed to ask. Please, Clare. This matters."
I read it once.
My mother had been out for nine days.
She'd served her six months in the women's unit at the house of correction in South Bay, two miles from Harbor, and come out in a cardigan from the commissary.
