Chapter 14: Delilah Breaks
The service corridor behind the ballroom smelled of steam and floor soap.
I had walked a hundred corridors like it with a tray on my shoulder.
Delilah stood against the wall between two rolling racks of clean glasses.
She still wore the camel coat over jeans.
Her mascara was gone, and her hands were wrapped around her phone.
"You came," she said.
"You said you'd tell it tomorrow," I said. "That was two days ago."
"I know."
She held the phone out.
"Read it first. Then decide if I'm worth hearing."
I took it.
The thread was labeled T.
The first message was dated the Monday before the wedding.
"Garage, level two, Tuesday seven p.m. Bring your passport. Half in cash, half after."
Below it, the morning of the wedding, at 9:12.
"If your mother panics and puts someone else in the dress, stay gone. Do not come back until I say."
Below that, at 3:30.
"She will not put the maid in. She is not that clever."
I read it twice.
My hands were cold.
"He guessed it would be me," I said.
