Chapter 22: The Board Meeting
On Monday at nine the forty-eighth floor held more people than the room had chairs.
Directors sat at the black walnut table.
Reporters were kept in the hall, but the glass wall let them watch.
Tobias came in last, with a lawyer in a camel coat and a folder he had clearly replaced.
He sat at the far end and looked at me.
A woman in a plain blue suit sat by the window with her hands folded.
I had not met her.
She had arrived with Mrs. Verran's lawyer, and nobody had introduced her.
The board's counsel called the meeting to order.
"Item one," she said. "A complaint by Mr. Tobias Verran against Mrs. W. Larkin Verran, for assault on Sunday."
Tobias's lawyer rose.
"My client was attacked in a public lobby by a shareholder who has a history..."
"Of what?" I said.
"Of..."
"Of carrying your client's coat?"
A director near the middle coughed to hide a laugh.
The counsel touched the remote on the table.
The big wall screen lit with the lobby camera.
