Chapter 10: Atlantic City

"Who spent it?" I said.

"That's the thing. The casino keeps marker records forever. Treasury never asked for them." Marge exhaled. "Nobody ever drove down."

"We'll drive down."

"We?"

I looked at Lucas.

He'd heard every word.

He was already standing up.

"Tomorrow," he said. "I'll drive."

We left at seven on Saturday.

My guard followed in his sedan with a stack of westerns on the passenger seat.

Lucas drove a black Range Rover.

Two hands on the wheel. Exactly the speed limit.

"You can pass the minivan," I said.

"It's a family."

"It's a family doing forty in the left lane."

"They have a bumper sticker about their honor student."

"Lucas."

He passed the minivan.

He apologized to it under his breath.

I laughed so hard I had to put my coffee in the cup holder.

【I would die for this man in a road trip.】

【In the book he had a DRIVER. Kitty never saw him drive. She thought he couldn't.】

By the time we hit the Garden State Parkway, he was letting me pick the music.

By the shore he was singing under his breath.

I didn't say a word, in case he stopped.

The casino surveillance chief was a big, tired man who'd been a state trooper.

He met us in a basement office that smelled like carpet cleaner.

"Archive's offsite," he said. "Paper from 2009. I can have the marker file by morning."

"Morning?" Lucas said.

"Sir, it's Saturday. You want it faster, buy the casino."

Lucas looked like he was actually considering it.

I stepped on his foot.

The hotel upstairs had a convention in it.

Dentists. Two thousand of them.
