The camp turned on her in a heartbeat.
It was not loud.
It was a small, shuffling thing.
The woman with the sore-mouthed daughter looked at Ilu and looked away.
A hunter folded his arms.
Nobody said the word liar, but it hung in the cold air over the empty pit.
"The little one dreamed," said Hurn, kindly, in a voice that carried.
"She is hungry and frightened, and the cave has filled her head. No one blames her."
Ilu stood with her fingers wound in Lois's coat and stared at the dark square in the ice.
She was shaking so hard that her teeth clicked.
She had been so sure.
She stared at the straw and the branches, and at the snow trampled flat around the hole.
Her eyes went on staring, because there was nothing else to do with them.
And then they saw it.
It was a very small thing.
The snow beside the pit was trampled, but not everywhere.
Along one edge, where the willows were thickest, it was marked with two long parallel grooves.
