Chapter 20: The Porch
The deputy was about twenty-five, with a clean face and a clipboard.
He looked at Lois.
"Ma'am, are you hurt?"
"I'm fine."
"Your coat's torn."
"It caught on a nail."
"You've been gone since Friday morning," said a voice behind him.
Carl came down two steps, and his face was a perfect picture of relief.
He wore a clean vest and a pained smile, and he held his phone in his hand.
"Aunt Lois, thank God. We've been calling since Friday noon."
"The neighbor came by at four, and your car was here and the house was dark. I was out of my mind."
The neighbor from the farm down the road stood in the kitchen doorway in a quilted vest, with her arms crossed.
She was seventy and she did not like Carl.
She also did not like to be woken before dawn by a deputy's flashlight.
"We'll get you a cup of tea," she told Lois. "And a blanket."
"I'm fine."
"You're covered in mud."
"Where were you?" Carl asked, softly. "Two days. Two nights. With a child."
Lois opened her mouth.
What could she say?
I was twenty thousand years ago, feeding a tribe?
She said, "I went for a walk."
