Chapter 17: Count the Votes
The vote took ten minutes.
Ansel waited in the corridor outside the home locker room with Jory.
Jory was sweating through his hoodie and chewing the string at its neck.
The door was shut, and the voices behind it had gone from loud to very quiet.
When it opened, the team came out one at a time and did not look at either of them.
Dane came out last, in the middle of three seniors, with the captain's C already pinned to his jacket.
He saw Ansel and smiled his bank smile.
"Twelve to eleven," Dane said, cheerfully, to nobody.
"Democracy is a beautiful thing."
Jory started forward, and Ansel caught his sleeve.
"I voted for Torin," Jory said hoarsely.
"I voted for him as hard as I could.
"Two freshmen switched at the last minute.
"I think Dane drove them home all fall."
"Where is Torin?"
"He left through the back."
"Did he say anything?"
"He said nothing, and that's what scares me."
Ansel found him at nine that night.
He found him in the empty arena, after the custodian had gone.
The big lights were off, and only a row of blue work lamps burned.
