Chapter 22: The Wall Comes Down
On Wednesday night the closet door stood wide open, and the light from the desk lamp fell across the wall of paper.
Torin had a cardboard box in his arms and had not yet put a single page in it.
"I could do this alone," he said.
"I know."
"I don't want to do it alone."
Ansel came and stood beside him.
Up close the wall was worse and better than he had remembered.
Every page was straight, taped at the corners, and arranged by date.
There were physics problem sets in Ansel's cramped writing, and library receipts, and a napkin from the dining hall.
On the napkin he had written one line to himself in August, "Remember to eat."
Torin pulled it down first.
He held it up between two fingers.
"This was the first one."
"The napkin?"
"The first thing I took.
"It was the last week of August, move-in day.
"Your glasses had slid down your nose, and you couldn't push them up."
He swallowed.
"A woman asked if you needed help.
"You said, 'No, thank you, I've got it,' and then you dropped the lamp."
