Chapter 8: The Wall
Torin came down the stairs in three strides.
His bandaged fist swung, and Ansel did not flinch this time.
It hit the metal rail beside his head, and the whole stairwell rang.
Ansel kept his eyes open.
"You said yes to him."
"I said yes to buy time."
"You said it twice."
Torin's chest was heaving.
"He called you a good boy.
"He put his hand on you.
"I'll put him in the lake."
"And then he wins."
Ansel kept his voice low and even.
"He has a photograph and three papers.
"If you touch him, you get a suspension, I get expelled, and he gets everything.
"Think, Torin."
"I can't."
It came out of Torin like something torn.
His fist stayed pressed to the rail, and the muscle in his forearm was shaking.
"I can't think when it's you.
"It goes white.
"I just want to break everything that looks at you."
Ansel looked at the shaking arm.
Then he reached out and laid his hand over the bandaged fist and held it still.
"Breathe," he said.
"I'm here."
Torin breathed.
It took a minute, and then another, and the arm stopped trembling.
