Chapter 15: Chest Harness

Rafa's POV

I laid the first loop of rope around her ribs, just under her breasts, and felt her breathe in against it.

"Tell me when it bites," I said.

"It isn't biting."

"It will."

My phone lay face down on her dresser with Kruk's message on it, Monday at nine on the back stairs, and neither of us had said a word about it.

She stood at the foot of her bed in nothing but the rope, with her hair down and her chin up.

She watched my hands the way she watched everything I did.

I took the tail around her back, across, and under.

I could do this with my eyes closed, and I kept them open, because it was her.

Last February it snowed for three days.

I was on the front steps with a bag of salt when she came up from the bus with nine grocery bags, four on one arm and five on the other, her glasses fogged and her scarf frozen stiff.

I came down the steps with my hand out.

She said, "I'm fine."

She said it before I had finished the first word.

She climbed the steps past my hand, and she carried all nine bags up three flights.

I stood in the stairwell and listened to every one of her steps.

That was the night I learned that holding a hand out to Magda Cieslak is a door she will shut politely in your face.

So I stopped holding it out.

"You went somewhere," she said.

"No."

"Your hands stopped."

I looked down.

They had stopped, with the rope across her sternum.

"Hold still," I said, and she did, and I drew the next wrap across the top of her breasts and pulled it snug.

The jute pressed into her soft skin and lifted it, and I heard her breath catch.

"There," I said. "That bites."

"A little."

"Good."

I made the turn at her back, and a second, and a third.
