Chapter 17: Spread
He had stuck my flyer to the refrigerator in 1G.
I saw it on Saturday night when he came up, because he told me, standing in my doorway with a steel mixing bowl in both hands and a paper bag hooked on one wrist.
"I read it every morning," he said. "Before the coffee."
"Rafa, what's in the bowl?"
"Come and see," he said.
"Is that ice?"
"Bedroom," he said.
I went.
The coil of jute lay on my bed already, and the red bandana on top of it.
He set the bowl on the nightstand and took a long white feather out of the bag.
It was a craft-store feather, as long as my forearm, and he held it across his palm with the quill toward me.
"Where did you even find that?"
"A shop on Milwaukee. The woman asked what it was for," he said.
"What did you tell her?"
"A customer," he said, and the tooth showed.
I laughed, and he let me, and then he stopped smiling.
"Take your clothes off, Magda."
I took them off.
He folded the bandana in a long band and tied it over my eyes, and the room went dark and warm.
I stood naked with my arms at my sides and my heart knocking.
His hand on my elbow turned me.
"Lie down. Spread out."
I lay down in the middle of the bed.
"Arms out. Legs apart."
I made a star of myself on the comforter.
He took my left wrist, and I felt the rope go around it, and a firm pull up to the iron post, and a knot.
Then he went around the head of the bed and did the right.
I was pinned at both wrists, with the iron cool under my palms.
He came down to the foot of the bed.
My left ankle first.
He drew the jute around it twice and tied it to the post at the corner of the frame, and then my right.
