Chapter 24: The Last Drip
The company's letter came on a Friday in February.
It said that Rafael Ibarra was hired as salaried resident superintendent, with a licensing course paid for by the company.
It said that Dennis Kruk would no longer be handling the building.
It said my renewal in March would come in lower than my current rent.
It did not say why, and nobody in the building asked.
On Sunday the twenty-first, at noon, I opened my kitchen drawer and took out a Kohler box.
The receipt was still taped to the lid.
The sink had been dripping since Thursday, a steady, patient tick into the steel bowl, the eighth leak, the ninth, I had lost count.
I put the box on the counter.
I put a pipe wrench beside it, a heavy red one I had bought at the hardware store on Milwaukee.
I stood back with my arms folded and waited.
He knocked.
Two raps, evenly spaced.
He had a key to my door now, a real one, on his own ring, and he knocked anyway.
I opened it.
"You've got your hat on," I said.
"It's cold on the stairs."
"It's seventy degrees in the stairwell. You told me the boiler's running like a champion."
"It is." He pulled off the hat. "But I like how you look at me when I take it off."
I stepped back to let him in.
He crossed the kitchen and set his tool bag down on the linoleum, without being told where.
Then he saw the counter and went still.
He looked at the box.
He looked at the wrench.
He looked at the collar at my neck, black leather and the small brass M.
I had worn it every day since Christmas, under a scarf at the office and uncovered at home.
"Magda."
"It's been eleven months," I said. "It's time."
I picked up the wrench and held it out to him, handle first.
He took it.
I took the box, and I put it in his other hand, and for a moment he stood holding both of them against his chest.
"I don't have to do it today," he said. "We can leave it another week. We can leave it a year. I don't need the reason."
"I know."
"I'm not asking."
