The crabs came down on Eastern Avenue.
They hit the street and the parked cars and the roofs of the rowhouses across the way.
Some bounced off the shutters over the bay with a sound.
Within five minutes there were hundreds of them in the street, and every one of them was coming to the nest.
"Gloria," I said. "Half."
She put her palm on the lobby doors and pulled them halfway shut with her word.
"One at a time, hon," she told the crabs. "Same as Thursday."
Calvin stood just inside the gap with the roofer and the three fighters who'd left Pennington on the dock.
The man from Linwood stood behind them with a hockey stick, which was no use at all, and nobody told him so.
Behind me, the reds lay on cots and stretchers in rows across the lobby, in the order on Gloria's clipboard.
The first crab came through the gap, and Calvin put it on the tile under his knee.
