Chapter 22: Charge
For a second nobody in the lobby understood what they'd heard.
Then the man from Linwood started to laugh, and his son laughed because he did.
Gloria put her pen down on the clipboard.
"Well," she said. "Now you've got the parking spaces."
I looked down at my left wrist.
The band of light there didn't say Triage anymore.
It said Charge.
And behind my eyes the Board had changed.
I could see the line around the Green, and I knew it would do what I told it.
[Speak, and Baltimore hears you.]
The whole lobby was watching me.
My son was sitting on the floor with his back against my chair.
Calvin was in the doorway with the dead crab's shell still around his arms.
Pennington lay on his stretcher, green, with his eyes open.
I'd had eleven days to think about what the voice should have said at 2:14 on the first night.
I said it out loud, in my own lobby, and every head in Baltimore heard it.
