Chapter 15: The Warehouse
The east district records warehouse had a sodium light over its loading dock and a chain-link fence that nobody had mended since the hospital closed.
Three trucks stood with their tailgates down.
Beside them, on a concrete apron, a yellow industrial shredder was already running, with a conveyor belt feeding it from a pallet of cardboard boxes.
"There's two guards on the dock," whispered his friend, flat in the weeds beside Anzhi. "One at the gate. One by the shredder. Both big."
"I can see that."
"And a night manager in a glass office who is eating noodles."
"Good," said Anzhi. "He'll be easy."
Linchuan was not with them.
He was at the house, in the study of the Lakeside Court, receiving Second Uncle at eleven at night.
Second Uncle had demanded a long conversation about resignation for three days, and Linchuan was in his slippers.
He had said, "It will take hours. I will make it take hours."
He had kissed Anzhi at the study door before he went, once, hard, with a fist in his collar.
He had said nothing at all about being careful.
Anzhi could still feel it on his mouth, in the weeds, with a shredder running.
