Chapter 21: The Fall
The elders judged Pei in the Sword Yard at noon, in front of every disciple and every guest.
They did it standing, because there was no hall in the sect big enough to hold the people who wanted to watch.
Yan's uncle sat at the center on a plain bench, with the Plum Wheel mistress on his right.
Pei stood before them with his hands empty.
He still wore the deep-blue Hall robes and the jade pin.
He had not once bowed his head.
"Elder Pei Zhaohong," said Yan's uncle, in a heavy voice. "You are charged with three things."
He laid them out flat.
"That you hid the Founder's own words and read the Hall only the ledger that suited you."
"That you meant to put a living man into the fire at Midwinter, knowing he had committed no crime."
"That you used the Hall's seal to torture a man in the open, on this ground, before two hundred witnesses."
A murmur rolled across the Yard.
Pei raised his chin.
"I did what the Hall required. Every elder here knew the ledger. You have read it too. You preferred not to say so."
