Chapter 15: Marguerite in the Steam
Isaure would not let her go down the stair alone.
"I am not letting a woman who hands out poison cups meet you in a cave," she said.
She planted herself on the top step with a kitchen knife.
"She doesn't hand out poison cups."
"Then I'll be wrong, and I'll be wrong with a knife."
The steam met Liora halfway down, warm and wet, and the star was still in the crack in the roof.
Marguerite sat in the black pool to her shoulders with her hair floating around her.
She had stepped into the water in her shift, as if she needed somewhere warm and could not think where else.
"Thank you for coming," she said.
"You said no one."
"You brought the knife."
"That's Isaure's knife."
"Of course it is."
Marguerite almost smiled, and then she put her hands over her face.
"I was so sure it was me," she said through her fingers.
"I know you were. I was sure too."
"No. I mean I thought the woman in your cards was me, because he meant it to be me."
"I wanted to tell you the whole plan in the cloakroom, and I was too afraid."
