Chapter 22: The Archer's Name
For one long breath nobody on the far bank moved.
Then the grey knight, bleeding from the arm, planted her spear in the snow.
"That was the Duke he shot at," she said, loud enough for the whole gorge to hear.
"Poachers!" Hadrian cried.
He flung his crossbow down, and his face crumpled into a perfect mask of horror.
"There was a man on the cliff, I saw him, I loosed at the cliff! Good God, Bastien, I would never..."
"You loosed at my back," said Bastien.
He was on his feet.
Two knights held him under the arms, and he let them, and the blood soaked dark through his coat.
"Six paces from where I stood. With two hundred barons standing between."
"The snow!" said Hadrian. "The torches! A man may miss..."
"Bring him," said Bastien.
He did not shout it.
He said it to the captain, and the captain turned to the north cliff and raised his arm.
A rope came sliding down the black rock, and then a man did, bound and bleeding, between two knights.
