Chapter 21: The Bank

I looked at it under the light pole.

Then I sent it to Lise and Etienne, both, with no message.

Lise wrote back within seconds.

"I'M GOING TO KILL HIM. WITH A SPOON."

Etienne took longer.

"Mémère?"

"Tonight," I wrote.

"Want me there?"

I looked at that for a while.

"Yes," I wrote.

It was the first yes I'd given him since row nine.

Mémère sits on her porch every night from sundown to her cigarette, and then from her cigarette to bed.

The storm took her porch swing, so she sits in a kitchen chair now.

She says it's better for her back and worse for her temper.

Etienne was on the bottom step when I pulled up.

He stood up when he saw me.

He didn't come to meet me.

He waited until I came up the steps, and then he followed one step behind, the way he'd climbed the stairs in New Orleans.

"Two of you," Mémère said. "On a weeknight. Somebody's dying or somebody's pregnant."

"Neither," I said.

"Shame. I could use a baby on this island that isn't Luc."

Etienne coughed into his fist.

I didn't sit on the step below her chair this time.

I pulled up the other kitchen chair and sat in front of her, eye to eye, and put my phone in her lap.

"I know you won't watch the video," I said. "So read this."

She put on her reading glasses.

She scrolled with one crooked finger, slow.

The gray boxes.

The org chart.

Month eighteen.

The nine million.

She didn't make a sound.

When she was done, she took her glasses off and folded them and handed me back my phone.

"I've seen it," she said.

The porch went quiet.

"You've what?"

"Houston's lawyer sent me their plan in June. All of it. They wanted my signature, chère, not Luc's. They're not stupid. They send me everything." She looked out at the dark fields. "Luc doesn't know. Luc thinks I read the pretty slides with the sunsets."
