Chapter 15: What the Boy Touches
By morning they had laid out everything the boy put in his mouth.
It filled the long table in the antechamber.
There was a pair of ivory chopsticks, a silver spoon, a porcelain tea cup with a chipped foot, and a jade toothpick.
There was a writing brush with a chewed end, and a bone comb.
There was the mouthpiece of the little bamboo flute he had once been taught to play.
Ye Shuhan wore a leather apron over her gown.
Beside her stood a bottle of black vinegar and a row of clean saucers.
"Lead dissolves in sour," she said. "Boil vinegar in a leaded vessel, and it turns sweet as syrup. A man cannot tell it from honey."
"I can," Linyuan said.
"You will touch it with the tip of your tongue and spit at once."
"I know."
"Taster Su."
"Madam Ye, I know."
The Regent stood at the end of the table with his hands behind his back, and he said nothing.
He had not slept either.
Linyuan went through the table piece by piece.
The ivory chopsticks, steeped in hot vinegar, tasted of vinegar.
The silver spoon tasted of vinegar and a little metal.
The tea cup, the toothpick, the flute and the comb tasted of nothing worth a word.
