Chapter 14: The Bath
They beat the round of sixteen two goals to nothing.
Dex scored the first one in the ninth minute with a low shot from the left wing.
He ran straight to the corner flag and pointed at the sky.
Then he turned and pointed at the stands, at the section where the federation had put me.
The camera caught his face.
I stood in the stands in a jersey with the number nine on it.
I cried, and a stranger hugged me.
That night I came back to the suite at eleven and found the bathroom door open and the tub running.
Steam rolled out into the bedroom.
Dex sat on the edge of the bath, in his shorts, testing the water with his elbow.
"I saw this in a movie," he said.
"A man draws a bath for a woman.
There are candles.
I didn't find candles, so I used the hotel's emergency flashlight."
He pointed.
A flashlight stood upright on the tile with its beam aimed at the ceiling.
I laughed so hard I had to hold the doorframe.
"It's very romantic," I said.
"It's a fire code violation."
"It's a love language."
He stood and crossed to me.
He had a bruise on his cheekbone from a tackle and a grass stain on his shin.
