Chapter 8: The Shower

"I'm going to go up there and break his nose," Mercer said.

"You are not."

"He put his hands on you."

"And I took them off."

He stood in the middle of my sitting room with his fists closed.

His jaw was tight, and a muscle jumped in it.

I had never seen him angry before.

He had been commanding, and focused, and hungry, but this was a different thing, low and hot and very still.

"He called you his property," Mercer said.

"He said it to my face, in front of nobody, like it was a fact.

And I stood in that hallway and I didn't open the door."

"If you had, you'd be off the squad, and he'd have what he wanted."

"I know."

"So you did the right thing."

"It doesn't feel like the right thing."

"Mercer."

I crossed to him and put both hands on his chest.

He was breathing hard.

I could feel his heart through the cotton.

"I don't want you to hit him," I said.

"I want you to look at me."

He looked.

"I'm here," I said.

"I'm not his.

I'm not anybody's, unless I say so."

His eyes searched my face.

Then something in them broke, and he caught the back of my neck and kissed me so hard I rocked back on my heels.

"Then say so," he said, against my mouth.

"Say whose you are."

"Yours."

"Again."

"Yours.

Tonight.

Mercer, please."

He picked me up.

He carried me through the bedroom and into the bathroom, and the lights came on, bright over white marble, and he set me on my feet in front of the glass shower.
