Chapter 19: Alpha

Brynn's POV

The stone was cold through my boots.

I climbed the dais one step at a time with three hundred wolves at my back.

At the top I turned around.

The fires were low and gold, and the fourteenth moon sat huge over the ridge, so bright my wrist ached.

Davin stood at the foot of the steps with Sable beside him.

He didn't look angry anymore.

He looked ready to be told.

"Madam Envoy," I said. "I'd like to speak."

"The Moon's daughter may speak," the envoy said. "I would be glad if she did."

I raised my left arm to the fires.

"For thirteen moons I wore a vine on this arm," I said. "It said yes, every day, to a man sitting in that seat. Nobody asked me if I wanted to say it."

Nobody spoke.

"Tonight somebody is asking."

I looked at Davin.

"I won't give it to you."

He nodded once.

"I won't give it to the man who cut the vine," I said. "I won't give it to his father."

I found Orrin's face in the front row.

He was no longer smiling.

"The book says a Moon's daughter gives her consent to him or to anyone," I said. "Edda, read it again."

"To him or to anyone," Edda called from the table. Her old voice cracked across the clearing. "It doesn't say anyone but her."
