Chapter 4: Edda's Table

Edda was waiting for me at the top of the east trail with a lantern and a blanket.

She didn't ask where I'd been.

"Lodge is the Alpha's house," she said. "Your boxes are already on its porch, and Davin's wolves have the key. You're sleeping at mine."

"The envoy said my house wasn't to be touched."

"The envoy said your house. That lodge was never yours, child, and he knows it." She put the blanket around my shoulders. "Come on."

Her cabin sat at the bottom of the east trail, with a tin roof and a woodstove that had been burning since I was nine years old.

That was the winter my mother died.

Edda had fed me at this table every night until I stopped flinching at the sound of the door.

She put a bowl of barley soup in front of me now and a heel of the bread I'd baked that morning.

"Eat."

"Edda."

"I'm not talking until you've eaten."

I ate half the bowl before I could say it.

"The crescent glowed. Everybody saw it, and you were looking right at it."

"I was."

"You looked at it at lunch, too. You put your fork down."

"I did."

"What is it?"

Edda stirred her tea and took a long time to answer.

"It's the mark you were born with," she said. "Your mother had it, and her mother had it. You eat now, and I'll tell you what I know when it's mine to tell."

"When will that be?"

"Soon." She did not look up. "Not tonight."

I wanted to push, but the stove was warm and my whole body had gone heavy, and I let it go.
