Chapter 16: Struck Out

I gave the elders my answer at sundown, on the block of stone where Hugh had stood.

The whole pack had come back to the Circle to hear it.

"I won't take the seat," I said.

A murmur ran around the stones.

"I have a clinic and a boss who's counting," I said. "I'm not going to rule three hundred people who knelt to me this morning because they couldn't stand up."

"Then who leads us?" the old elder asked.

"You do," I said. "All of you. A council, elected, with a vote for every adult, omegas first."

"Nobody's mother gets locked in a cellar for it ever again."

The murmur turned into a roar.

When it died down, Lorcan stepped up beside me with the pack ledger in his arms.

It was the big leather book where the law Alpha wrote down every decree.

He had not asked me if he could do this.

"This is the entry for the night of the Midsummer Moon Run," he said, and his voice carried to the back without effort.

He turned the pages, and everybody waited.

"Council hearing. Sorrel Linwood, omega's daughter, with child. Unmated. Referred to the Alpha." He looked up. "Beneath it, in my hand: Not mine."

Nobody moved.

"I wrote that down myself, an hour after she walked out," he said. "I wrote it clean, with a ruler, and I closed the book."

"It was the neatest page I ever wrote, and the worst."

He took a pen from his pocket and drew one hard line through the entry.

Then he wrote underneath it, and he read it as he wrote.

"By the law of the Moon Circle, no woman of this pack shall be sent away for the child she carries. No father shall deny his own pups before the pack. Any Alpha who does so loses his seat."

He signed it.

Gareth and Thane came forward and signed under him.

Then the elders did, and then half the pack lined up, one by one, to put their names on the page.
