Chapter 8: The Oldest Note
Niko's POV
She slept at last at midnight, and I did not.
I sat in the chair by the window with the lamp off and watched her back rise and fall against the wall.
She slept with her knees drawn up and one hand under her pillow, where I knew the knife was.
I had not moved in two hours.
My body still hummed from her.
There was a mark on my shoulder where her nails had gone in.
I put my fingers on it and did not understand what I had done.
I had not been refused in six years.
I had not wanted anything I could not buy since I was thirty-two.
I had watched her write my name on the deck of my brother's boat, with the words client, not agreed, and the floor had gone out from under me.
I had gone back for it every day since.
I would have gone back to that boat forever, to be told no.
It was a sickness, and I knew it, and I did not want the cure.
At one in the morning I got up and went out to the kitchen.
