Chapter 12: The Redemption Run

Demi read the message twice and handed the phone to Drake.

He read it once.

"He knows I am here," Drake said.

"He knows everything on this mountain," Demi said. "His people built half of it."

She stood and pulled on her shirt.

Outside, the rain had stopped, and the meadow lay steaming in the early light.

A crowd had gathered in front of the lodge, and Quinton stood on its porch with a microphone in his hand.

He wore a fresh suit.

His eyes were red, and his smile was brittle.

"Good morning," he said into the microphone. "Pellham Talent would like to address the events of yesterday."

Cameras swung toward him.

"A family dispute was made public by one person with an agenda. We forgive her. We want her back. And we want to give her a chance to prove she belongs with us."

He turned toward Demi as she walked across the grass.

"We are proposing a Redemption Run," he said. "Live, today, at noon. One obstacle course, built by our own crew, with the whole country watching. If Demi finishes it, the family drops all claims and all hard feelings."

He smiled at the lens.

"If she refuses, then she has shown who she really is, and her release is void."

The crowd murmured.

Demi stopped at the foot of the steps.

"Who built the course?" she asked.

"Our production partners."

"Pellham Talent."

"A family business," Quinton said. "We look after our own."

"And if I fail?"

"Then you owe us two million dollars," he said lightly. "As agreed."

Drake stepped up beside her, his face carefully blank.

"Demi," he said quietly. "You do not have to."

"If I refuse, he wins the claim," she said. "If I run, he builds me a trap."

"Yes."

"Then I will run the trap."

She climbed the steps and faced the microphone.

"I accept," she said. "Noon. Live. On the raw feed."

Quinton's smile twitched.

"The main broadcast is where..."

"Raw feed," Demi said. "Or the answer is no."
