Chapter 13: The Stamp

Eleanor opened the drawer the rest of the way.

The stamp lay on a folded handkerchief, a brass block with a black wooden handle.

Its face was wet with fresh ink.

"I put it in here dry," she said.

"Who has a key to this room?"

"I do. The housekeeper does. Alden's old chief of staff does, because he handled the senator's papers for twenty years." She counted on her fingers and stopped at four.

"And Lowell and Beau, if either of them ever copied one."

"Then we start with the one who walks in without knocking."

She nodded, and picked up her pen.

By sunrise she had written a trustee's demand to inspect every plan record, in her slanted hand, on the thick cream paper.

The plan gave the trustees ten business days to produce them.

She sent it to Lowell's lawyer by courier before breakfast.

By nine, the Friday vote had been moved to the twenty-ninth.

"They need the bank's lawyers," she read from her phone, and almost smiled. "That is what they say when they're afraid."

She called the chief of staff herself.

He answered on the first ring.

"Eleanor. How lovely to hear from you."

"I'd like to come by at noon," she said. "Alone, except for my tutor."

"My condo is very small."

"Then she can wait in the car."

He lived in a tan brick complex off Broad Street, with two parking lots and a fountain that wasn't running.
