Chapter 23: You Made a Rule

Carrie's POV

The trust officer was waiting for me at nine o'clock on Monday morning, in the same gray office as before, with two folders on her desk.

She stood up when I came in.

"Ms. Unsworth," she said. "Mr. Ward. Please sit."

Talbot took the chair by the window.

I took the one across from her.

"I want to say that the bank is very sorry," she said. "Dr. Unsworth resigned as co-trustee at eight o'clock this morning, through his attorney. The practice account that received the transfers has been frozen. Our counsel advised that the full amount be restored today."

She turned a sheet of paper around and slid it over.

I looked at the number at the bottom.

A few weeks ago, in Portland, I had read a balance of zero on my phone.

This page said $184,000.00.

Below it, in smaller print, was a second line for interest.

I suspected the bank's lawyers had added it because they were frightened.

"Everything is in your name alone now," the officer said. "You're the sole trustee."

She handed me a pen.

It was a plain black pen, not a silver one in a folder with my name on the tab.

I signed.

The pen did not shake.

When I stood, the officer shook my hand and held it a second too long.

"My daughter was born at Mercy," she said, quietly. "I watched your father's speech on my phone on Saturday night. I'm very glad you came back to say it."

I did not know what to answer.

I thanked her.

Talbot held the door.

In the elevator down, we stood side by side watching the numbers fall.

His hand found mine without looking.
