Chapter 5: Family Money

I called the bank from the stairwell, because it was the only place in the building without glass walls.

It took forty minutes and three transfers to reach a trust officer.

She was a patient woman with a Connecticut accent, and she had my file open before I finished spelling my name.

"Ms. Unsworth, I'm so glad you called. We sent several letters."

"I didn't get any letters."

"They went to the address on file. Your parents' home."

I closed my eyes.

"Can you tell me where the money went?"

"I can read you the activity." Her keys clicked. "The trust was funded with one hundred eighty-four thousand dollars. Over four years, there were twenty-two withdrawals."

"Withdrawals by whom?"

"The co-trustee. Dr. Gordon Unsworth."

The stairwell light hummed over my head.

My father's name was typed on a screen in a bank four states away, next to my grandmother's money.

"What did he say it was for?"

"The memo on each one reads, Ivy, medical care. All payments went to the same account, Unsworth Women's Associates."

"That's his practice."

"Yes. I should say, Ms. Unsworth, the trust language allows distributions for your own education, health or support. It does not say anything about a sibling."

"Is that illegal?"

"It's not mine to say. But I would not call it what the trust intended." She paused. "There was also a release form emailed to you in March, asking you to approve the past withdrawals. It was never returned."

"I never saw it."

"Then I would not sign it, if I were you."

I thanked her. I don't remember what else I said.
