Chapter 15: The Physician's Trial
The Imperial Physician was carried into the Hall of Supreme Harmony in the Empress Dowager's own sedan chair, with her guards on either side.
He stepped out of it in his green robe, with his white beard combed, and bowed to the throne with a face of gentle grief.
The Dowager came behind him and took the seat that had been set for her at the foot of the dais.
"Jue," she said, so that her voice carried to the back wall.
"By the Edict of Mercy, a physician of the first rank may not be tried, unless the sovereign overrules his mother in open court."
"I ask you not to."
Four hundred officials held their breath.
Su Ming stood by the pillar at the Emperor's left, in his plain grey robe.
The kettle of tea was inside his sleeve against his ribs.
He had drunk two cups of it before dawn.
The Emperor sat on the throne, pale, with both hands on the arms.
"Mother," said Xiao Jue. "Your mercy reaches everyone who has not harmed your son. I do not overrule it. I only note where it stops."
The Dowager's face did not change, but she sat back in her chair.
"Begin," said the Emperor.
The Minister of Justice, a spare gray-haired man, came forward with the nine jars on a lacquered tray.
