Chapter 13: Frost Moon
At noon on Saturday every shutter in the pack hall stood open, and the light fell on ninety wolves who all looked like me.
Plain grey hoods, drawn forward, ninety shadowed faces in rows down the long tables.
Nobody spoke.
Only I stood bare-headed, at Niko's right hand, on the low platform where the Alpha greets the pack.
My hair hung loose to my waist, and the daylight lay on my scars.
I had told him to let me do it this way.
Now my knees shook inside my boots.
Orvo Aho stood below us in his sheepskin vest, a sheet of paper folded in his fist.
"Before the Name Walk," he said, "the pack is owed something."
His voice was warm, the voice of a man about to give a gift.
"I don't enjoy this. I have kept it for a week out of respect for the Alpha's father."
He unfolded the paper and held it up, so the clinic's letterhead showed.
"This is from a neurologist in Marquette, dated seven years ago."
