Chapter 16: Sanna Alone
"Not here," I said. "Come to the kitchen."
Sanna blinked at me on the lodge porch, her breath smoking.
"You don't want to hear it in your house?"
"It isn't my house yet. The kitchen is mine."
I put on my boots and my coat over his flannel, and I walked her down the path to the pack hall.
She followed three steps behind, her white coat flapping.
I unlocked the kitchen with the key on my ring and put on the lights.
Steel counters, hanging pots, the big stove gone cold, and the smell of bleach and last night's onions.
I filled the kettle because my hands needed something to do.
Sanna stood in the middle of the floor and did not sit.
"I came to say something," she said. "I've practised it all the way across the yard and it's gone."
"Then start with the worst thing."
She laughed, a short cracked sound, nothing like her laugh in the hall.
"The worst thing is that it wasn't careless."
I turned around.
"I have known for seven years who really lost him that night, and I have never said it."
