Chapter 1: The Key Won't Turn
Rose comes home to a changed lock, a message that gets unsent and her brother's voice on the phone; the door opens on the man she pleaded guilty to hitting.
I came home from a work trip on a Thursday afternoon with a suitcase and three wrapped gifts.
A silk scarf for my mother. A leather watch strap for my brother, who had asked for it by brand. A pink cashmere sweater for my sister.
I had taken the train from the airport and walked the last half mile, because I hadn't driven since I was twenty-one.
The porch looked wrong from the sidewalk.
My mother's wind chimes were gone from the hook by the door. The planter with the dead geranium was gone too.
There was a camera doorbell I had never seen, and a lock that was bright, new brass.
I put my key in anyway.
It went in halfway and stopped.
I tried it again, and then a third time, with my shoulder against the door.
I told myself they had changed the lock after a break-in and forgotten to call me.
I set down the gifts and took out my phone to call my mother.
A message came in first, from my sister, Briana.
Briana: Mom, don't forget to pick up a few pink throw pillows for my new room!
I had my thumb on the screen to answer when the message disappeared.
Under it, in small grey letters: Briana unsent a message.
She had typed it into the wrong thread, and she had caught it.
So there was another thread, one with my mother in it and a new room in it.
I wasn't in it.
I stood on the porch for a long moment with the suitcase leaning against my leg.
My phone rang.
"Nelly!" my mother said, in her warmest voice. "Are you back? I just now remembered I never told you."
"Told me what, Mom?"
"We moved! It has been a whirlwind. The new house is in Wellesley, you will love it. I'll text you the address, and we'll have you out for brunch Sunday, and we're so..."
Behind her, my brother Dean's voice cut in.
He wasn't talking to me.
I could hear that he didn't know the line was open.
"Why are you telling her? There's no bedroom for her there anyway."
My mother laughed, a small, quick laugh.
"Dean is joking, honey. You know how he is when he's tired."
"Is he?" I said.
"Of course there's room. There's always room for you."
"Mom, how long have you been in Wellesley?"
"Oh, a few weeks. It all happened so fast." She said it lightly, and then the line went quiet.
"I'll send the address," she said. "Love you. Safe travels."
She hung up before I could ask who had the house I was standing in front of.
A few weeks.
I had wired her two thousand three hundred dollars on the first of every month for eight years.
I had done it since I was twenty-one, from every apartment I had ever lived in. It was labeled House.
Standing on that porch, I understood that for a few weeks I had been paying for a house they no longer lived in, and a bedroom I wasn't going to get.
I opened my bank app.
The transfer was at the top of my scheduled payments. Marlene Dunphy. $2,300. Monthly. No end date.
I pressed Cancel.
The screen asked if I was sure.
I was.
So I stopped paying.
The confirmation came up green, and I laughed once, alone on the porch.
The deadbolt turned on the other side of the door.
I had not knocked. I had not touched the bell.
The door opened on a tall man with dark blond hair and grey eyes, a dish towel over one shoulder.
He had his weight on his right leg.
I knew that stance, and I knew his face from the front row of a courtroom eight years ago.
He was the man I had pleaded guilty to hitting with my mother's car on Hancock Street.
"The camera has been showing me your face for a while," he said.
His voice was level, and nothing in his eyes was.
"Hello, Rose Dunphy. I bought this house in August."
He looked at the three gifts on the porch, and then at me.
"I'm guessing nobody told you that either."
