Chapter 4: Friday
I waited until the floor was dark on Wednesday night.
Then I walked into Gavin's office without knocking and shut the door behind me.
He was at the window with his jacket off.
He turned and saw my face and put his glass down.
"Hazel."
"I have terms."
"Tell me."
"By Friday you say it. Out loud, in front of this whole company. Hazel Brennan is my wife."
He stood very still.
"My father has Sunrise House on a phone line, Hazel."
"Then he has it on a phone line. Friday. Or I sign something your father's lawyers will like very much, and you can explain that to the board instead."
"You wouldn't."
"Try me."
He crossed the carpet.
"I said it in my head every hour," he said. "Every single hour. Do you know what it's like to say your name in a room full of my father's people and have it come out wrong?"
"I know what it's like to hear it come out wrong."
"Hazel."
"And until you say it, you don't touch me at work."
"At work."
"Here. In this room. Not here."
"Here," he said.
His voice had gone low.
I did not step back.
I had been telling myself for five days that I hated him.
My heart was going so hard I could feel it in my teeth.
He put one hand on the edge of the desk beside my hip, and didn't touch me.
"Say the terms again."
"You don't touch me."
"Until Friday."
"Until Friday."
I put both my hands flat against his chest.
I meant to push.
I took a handful of his shirt and pulled his mouth down onto mine.
He made a sound I hadn't heard from him since Thursday.
He kissed me hard, with his teeth, with the fury I had carried across the city.
