Chapter 15: The First Night

The silver faded slowly under Saren's thumb.

"Does it hurt?" he said.

"No." Ellory touched the place himself. "It feels like someone said my name from a long way off."

"Someone did."

Ellory looked down at the pear in his other hand, and found he was blushing.

At noon Gwenith sat him on a rock and put a pear seed in his palm.

"Hum the first half," she said. "Low, from the belly."

He hummed.

The seed split, and a green shoot the length of his finger curled up out of his hand.

Lowen dropped a bowl.

By evening there was no one left in the hollow but the two of them.

The cave on the Whinbank had a fire, a heap of furs, and nothing else.

Ellory sat on the furs with his hands between his knees.

"I should tell you something," he said.

Saren stood in the cave mouth with the dusk behind him. He turned.

"I've never," Ellory said. "Done this. With anyone."

"Nor have I," Saren said, "past the one kiss."

"That's a lot of waiting."

"It was a very long sleep."

He crossed the cave and knelt on the furs.

His hands came up and rested on either side of Ellory's face, huge and careful.

"Tell me to stop," Saren said, "and see if I can."

"Don't you dare," Ellory said.

Saren's mouth curved.

He kissed him, and this time there was nothing in the kiss that waited.
