Maerielle left her dance card on an ordinary table beside the window.
Tavrian looked at the unprotected paper.
"Will it manage there?" he asked.
"It's dry," she said.
"For now."
She laughed and took the hand he offered.
They joined the dancers without anybody counting how her choice compared with another woman's.
His palm was warm against her back.
She enjoyed knowing the steps without moving her mouth to direct them.
When a couple crossed their path, Tavrian changed course and she followed without planning the correction first.
She liked the small surprise.
She liked being trusted to manage her own half of the dance.
Across the room, Cyralise was laughing with the women she'd brought.
Their pleasure had nothing to do with Maerielle.
